  EFFECTS OF THE SOLITON CONFIGURATION ON THE LOCALIZED MODES IN POLYACETYLENE

  The exact static configuration of the soliton in polyacetylene is determined through the self-consistent iterations and the localized modes around the soliton are numerically caiculated. They are compared with the results that the static configuration of the soliton is assumed to be the kink u₀tanh(n/L). The comparison shows that the self-consistent configuration improves the Goldstone mode by getting the positive-definite vibrational matrix, whereas the other localized modes change their frequencies only less than 0.03%. It confirms that the five localized modes around the soliton do exist in polyacetylene.

  The IBM has been extended to light nuclei as IBM 4. Now the group structure of the IBM 4 is discussed, four group chains are found, and an example of the spectrum with O(6) dynamical symetry is given.

  The research on mechanisms in continuum spectra of nuclear reactions, which currently is one of the most interesting subjects in nuclear physics, is introduced. The contribution from breakup-pickup-fusion(BPF), besides breaku-fusion(BF), is calculated for ⁵⁸(α,d) and ¹⁶⁵Ho(³He,d) reactions. Results give the double-peak structure appeared in experimental data.

  The correspondence relations between a fermion field and a boson field in (1+1)-dimensional quantum field theory is discussed in general. Emphases have been laid on the renorinalization with respect.to an arbitrary mass parameter in boson version as well as the nonlocal property of currents in fermion version. After establishing the equivalence between the continuous chiral transformation in fermion version and the translational transformation in boson version, we are able to prove the Coleman theorem correspondingly.

  The solutions for both the full Salpeter equation and the reduced Salpeter equation for the quark-anti quark bound states are investigated. General solutions and the solutions in the nonrelativistic approximation are discussed. Differences between two kinds of Salpeter equations are emphasized. It is especially noted that the observed φ-η_C mass splitting could be accounted for by using the full salpeter equation with a smaller vector Coulomb potential -α/γ, where α-π/12, which was obtained in very recent lattice gauge calculations and might be associated with the zero-point transverse fluctuations of the relativistic string.

  The variational method in Lagrangian formalism in lattice gauge theory in cumulant expansion is discussed. For SU(2) pure gauge Wi1son model to the third order corrections we show that there is no phase transition in four dimensions, but there exists the first order phase transition in five dimensions at β_C=0.838 in agreement with the Monte Carlo results. The physical meaning of higher order corrections is discussed.

  By using the modified MK renormalization transformation, the phase boundaries and renormalization trajectories of the couplings for an SU(2) single plaquette action with variable compments of spin 1/2 and spin 1 in the whole coupling parameter space are obtained. The results are discussed.

  It is shown that the difficulties met in the perturbation calculation of quantum field processes at finite temperatures are all due to improperness in the formulationaqd to certain ad hoc manipulations in previous versions of the theory. They disappear in the CTPGF (Closed Time Path Green's Function) formulation initiated by Schwinger, implying that the latter formulation brings about a more satisfactory theory.

  The electron bound states caused by dopants in plyacetylene are investigated. When the dopant sits nesr the double bond, there will be two bound states in the gap for positive U and outside the bands for negative U. Whereas when the dopant is absorbed at the single bond, four bound states are formed, two of them in the gap and the other too outside the bands.
